Features to be looked before buying an Epilator

Epilator, an electrical hair removal device. The functionality of an epilator is distinct from a shaver or trimmer, shaver just slices the hair from the skin surface whereas the epilator removes the hair from its root. Epilator is a small device designed to be portable and easy to use.

Try our epilator selector to choose right epilator by answering simple questions without reading any buying guide.

Epilating is an early technique that was almost started in the mid-’80s and believe it, this technique is better and cheaper than waxing and shaving. Waxing and epilating techniques are similar, waxing removes your hair from the root removing the cells from the epithelial tissue of the skin. Unlike waxing, epilating technique just removes the hair from the root without removing the cells. Epilator just drags out a bunch of hairs from the skin surface and makes your skin hair free and smooth.

Women who had experienced both waxing and epilating say that waxing is very painful and expensive than epilating. But one benefit of waxing is that it lasts for about 4 to 6 weeks whereas epilating lasts for only 4 weeks (this depends on the hair growth of the person). But still, epilators are more effective and cheaper than any hair removal technique like the cold wax, hot wax, shavers, and razors.

Basically, epilators are durable, portable, and cheaper. Looking into the eminent features of the epilator. Before buying an epilator you must look into below discussed features.

Number of Tweezers

Epilators are of 3 different types - spring type, rotating (spinning) disc type and tweezer type. To know more about the differences of epilators read our article, epilator types. (interlink to the article- the epilator types)

Basically, the number of tweezers in an epilator is directly proportional to the efficiency of an epilator. That’s why it's an important feature to look before you buy an epilator. In other words, more the tweezers in an epilator more hair can be removed at one time. Different model epilators have a different number of tweezers. For example, the Emjoi AP-9T model with 3 tweezers and the Emjoi AP-18 Emagine model with 72 tweezers. Epilator models with 3 to 10 tweezers are rarely found and any common epilator will have a minimum of 10 tweezers in it. Epilators with less number of tweezers are suitable for epilating facial hair whereas epilators with more number of tweezers are suitable for epilating arms and legs.

Speed Setting Level

Multiple speed settings will help you to set a suitable speed for the particular area. Mostly the branded epilators come with a minimum of 2-speed setting levels. The seed setting feature will be useful in sensitive areas of skin like underarms. Less speed is less painful compared to high speed.

Attachments

Most epilators have an attachment feature where you can replace the epilator head with attachment provided along with the epilator. Generally, the attachments can be like shaver head, tweezer head, tweezer with a narrow head, facial caps, epilator caps, trimmer head, pedicure buffer, massage rollers and charging stands.

Every attachment has its own advantages, for example, massage roller caps are for reducing the pain while epilating, narrow tweezer heads for bikini and face areas and pedicure buffer is an extra attachment for the foot massage. Remember more the number tweezers and attachment head more expensive the epilator is.

Dry or Wet

Basically, tweezer-type epilators are of two types -dry epilator and wet epilator. Mostly all epilators are ideal for dry skin, which means you cannot use it on wet skin. Wet skin epilators can be used on both dry and wet skin or you can also use it in shower or bathtub. The advantage of using wet epilator is this epilator is the best choice for sensitive skin and less painful.

In simple words wet epilators reduce pain, redness, rashes, and bumps on the skin. Wet epilators are the best choice for sensitive skin people.

Corded or Cordless

Mostly wet epilators are waterproof and work on rechargeable batteries whereas dry epilators can be any corded or cordless. Wet epilators are cordless because using electricity on wet skin can be dangerous. Better you choose a cordless epilator. Cordless epilators are easy to manage as cordless epilator can be used on any part of your body.

Rechargeable

You can find many varieties of both dry and wet epilator models that are battery operated or rechargeable. Battery operated epilator have less lifetime when compared with corded epilators. But still battery operated epilators are more convenient to use, you can take it around any part of the body you want to epilate.

Noise

Epilating hair from your arms and legs need a minimum of 30 minutes. Using a noisy epilator for 30 minutes or more time may irritate you and also disturb others. It's better to choose an epilator that does not make noise such that the epilating does not irritate you.

Inbuilt light

Inbuilt light is an extra feature to look. Inbuilt light helps you to find the tiny hair on the skin.
