Technically, difference between UPS and Inverter

Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) provides continuous power supply even there is a power cut. Inverter circuit simple converters battery DC current to AC and supply. Sorry, we know this is the answer you are not looking, and won’t solve your confusion.

Practically, difference between UPS and Inverter

The terms mean UPS and inverter are different. So first define those terms and explain the differences.

• UPS: Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) provides power in case of power cut. Mostly used for desktop computers backup.
• Inverter: It is a power backup solution. The total unit consists of three component the charges (your homes electricity), battery and Inverter circuit which converts DC battery current to electricity.

UPS is used on general only to backup your system. If you connect desktop computer on inverter, any power loss, shutdowns the computer as it takes one microsecond to fall over to the backup power solution. Inverter is not suitable for computer backup due to the delay in switching. The computer crash not only leads to the lost of data, unsaved programs, but also may damage hard disk and motherboard.

UPS give backup only 10 to 20 minutes. The main intention of it is to provide backup only for small time so that you can save the programs and data. Inverters purpose is to provide power backup to total home appliances, lights, fans.

Inverter uses flat plate or tubular battery to store electricity. So it requires continuous maintenance, needs to fill the distilled water toppings at regular intervals of time. UPS uses sealed maintenance free(SMF) battery, which do not require any maintenance. Switch on the UPS and forget about it. Apart from that UPS comes at lesser price around 2k - 6k rupees. The inverter is costly, including the battery, the total power backup combos comes in range of 10,000 Rs to 30,000 Rs depending on the capacity you would like to take.
