Does the geyser need service?

Geysers need regular servicing to ensure they have a long and trouble-free lifespan. The most important reason for geyser servicing is safety, as it helps prevent scaling formation. Over time, minerals present in water, such as calcium and magnesium, accumulate on the heating elements and other parts of the geyser. This affects the geyser's performance and can also be risky for us.

The importance of geyser service

Major factors that make geyser servicing necessary are scaling, rusting, and damaged coatings on the heating elements. Scaling occurs when calcium and magnesium accumulate on the geyser's heating element over time, leaving a white, hard salt-like substance covering the element. This negatively affects the geyser's performance by causing it to take longer to heat up, lower the hot water pressure, and heat water inconsistently, and can even lead to leakage. Scaling can also damage the heating element's coating (such as enamel or glass lining), which can be dangerous and even cause electric shock or death. During servicing, a qualified technician will check the heating element for scaling and remove it if necessary. If the coating is damaged, the heating element will need to be replaced entirely. Unfortunately, there is no way to repair a damaged heating element, and replacing it is crucial to avoid the risk of electric shock in the future.

During the servicing, the technician checks the tank for rust and water leakage. Leaking water can pass through the electrical circuit and cause electric shock. Depending on the tank's condition, the technician will either repair or replace it.

The thermostat is a thermal cut-off switch that prevents overheating. If the water overheats and the thermostat is not functioning correctly, the water can evaporate, causing pressure to increase inside the tank. In such cases, a pressure release valve (multi-functional valve) will release water and vapor from the tank to prevent the tank from exploding. During servicing, the technician checks if the pressure release valve is functioning correctly.

The purpose of the magnesium anode is to prevent the inner parts of the tank from rusting. The anode itself rusts to protect the tank. If the anode rod has rusted excessively and is about to break, it needs to be replaced.

How often should we service the geyser?

The need for geyser servicing depends on the water quality in your home. If the water is very soft and the geyser is brand new, you can ignore servicing for the first two years. After that, make sure to have the geyser serviced every 12 months. However, if the water is hard, regardless of the age of the geyser, it should be serviced every 12 months. If your geyser is showing the following signs, you need to seek professional repair immediately:

  • Geyser making strange noises like gurgling, hamming
  • Leaking from the geyser
  • The geyser taking a long time to serve hot water
  • A rusted tank, if brownish rusted water is coming out of the geyser
  • Bad odors coming from the geyser
  • Steam or smoke coming from the geyser
